An Art Deco original gouache heightened with gold on paper laid down to board (circa 1936), signed by Jean Dunand on the lower right. The artwork depicts five bare-chested agricultural workers harvesting a stylized wheat field, wielding scythes and binding sheaves within a rhythmically structured composition executed in earth tones and gold accents.
This preparatory study relates directly to Dunand's monumental 18-panel incised gold lacquer mural created for the 1937 International Exposition of Art and Technology in Modern Life in Paris (”Exposition Internationale des Arts et Techniques Appliqués à la Vie Moderne”).
Work related to the monumental project for the 1937 International Exposition. Documented in Félix Marcilhac, “Jean Dunand: Sa vie, son œuvre”, 1991, p. 149 (view of the artist's studio) and p. 330 (nos. 1229-1231 for the lacquer panels).
