This monumental direct-carving sculpture depicts a young rhinoceros in a powerful, static stance, firmly set upon an integrated rectangular base. Carved from a solid block of mahogany wood, the piece is characterized by simplified, massive, and geometric volumes, highly representative of the finest Art Deco animalier sculpture. The detailed execution of the head emphasizes the animal's natural armor, its horn, and the heavy folds of its hide, creating a beautiful contrast with the smoother surfaces of its body.
The sculpture bears the following engraved inscription: "Mateo Hernandez Bejar 1885 Meudon 1949 Rhinoceros 1936 Mahogany". This masterpiece is fully documented and referenced in the monograph Mateo Hernandez, Un escultor espagnol en Paris (Junta de Castilla y León, 1998, pages 264 and 265).
