Marc Du Plantier was a brilliant French interior designer, decorator, and painter, and a master of neoclassical modernism. Famous for his highly theatrical and ultra-luxurious interiors, he successfully married classical antique proportions with the sleek lines of mid-20th-century avant-garde design. His timeless style, embraced by international high society from Madrid to Los Angeles, embodies a rare, erudite decorative elegance.
Biography
Following studies in architecture at the Beaux-Arts in Paris and painting at the Académie Julian, he opened his firm in 1928, immediately introducing a unique style that streamlined classical frameworks while integrating subtle Surrealist undertones.
Based in Madrid from 1939 to 1949, he achieved monumental success by decorating the most lavish palaces for the Spanish aristocracy, infusing them with a grand opulence inherited from tradition but tailored to modern comfort.
In the 1950s, he temporarily relocated to Los Angeles, captivating the Hollywood elite with his signature Parisian chic, before returning to Paris to design residences for top diplomats, fashion designers, and industrial tycoons.
His highly sculptural furniture pieces favored noble, matte, or light-reflecting materials such as gilded bronze, patinated wrought iron, stucco, parchment, and marble, conceived as integral architectural elements of the space.
